Compare the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a product with one factor by considering whether the other factor is greater than, equal to, or less than one. They reason without multiplying.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student predicts that 12 times 3/4 is less than 12 and that 12 times 5/4 is greater. The student explains the comparison using fraction size.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may believe multiplication always makes a number larger. They may compare only numerators and ignore whether the multiplier is above or below one.
How to Assess It
- Without calculating, ask students to compare 18 times 7/6 and 18, then compare 18 times 5/8 and 18. Require explanations.
