The Standard
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system when the conversion factor is given. Use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recall grade 4 conversion factors for feet and inches, kilometers, meters, and centimeters, and hours, minutes, and seconds. They use supplied factors for other same-system conversions and apply the results in multi-step situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 3 feet per yard, a student converts 7 yards to 21 feet and uses that value in a perimeter problem. The student labels every quantity with its unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply regardless of conversion direction or combine measurements before expressing them in the same unit. They may also omit units during intermediate steps.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to find the total centimeters in two ribbons measuring 2 meters and 75 centimeters, then explain which conversion relationship they recalled.

Measure several objects in meters and centimeters, then recall the meter-centimeter relationship to rewrite each length in one chosen unit.
