The Standard

Know relative sizes of measurement units: ft., in.; km, m, cm • Know the conversion factor and use it to convert measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit: ft., in.; km, m, cm; hr., min., sec. • Given the conversion factor, convert all other measurements within a single system of measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit. • Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recall the unit relationships for feet and inches, kilometers, meters, and centimeters, and hours, minutes, and seconds. For other same-system units, they use a supplied factor to express a larger-unit measurement in smaller units and record equivalents in a table.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student recalls that one foot is 12 inches, converts 4 feet to 48 inches, and records both values in aligned table rows. For another same-system conversion, the student uses a provided factor and explains why the smaller-unit count is larger.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide when converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit or use addition instead of a multiplicative factor. They may also mix unrelated systems.

How to Assess It

Ask students to recall the number of seconds in one minute and convert 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 8 minutes into a two-column table.
