What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They choose a sensible unit and use familiar benchmarks to make a reasonable estimate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student estimates a pencil at about 18 centimeters and a doorway at about 2 meters. The student explains each estimate using a known length or mental reference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an impractical unit, such as meters for a crayon. They may guess without a benchmark or confuse the relative sizes of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
How to Assess It
- Show a pencil and a classroom door. Ask students to choose a unit, estimate each length, and name the benchmark they used.

Ways to Teach It
Build benchmark strips for one inch, one foot, one centimeter, and one meter, then use them to estimate objects.
Ask students which unit fits a desk length best and why.
Play estimate-and-check by recording an estimate, measuring the object, and scoring how close the estimate was.
Estimate lengths needed for a bulletin-board border, a book cover, and a classroom rug.
