The Standard

What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a length tool that fits the object and unit being measured. They align the tool correctly, read the scale, and report the nearest whole unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses a ruler for a pencil and a measuring tape for a larger or curved object. The student starts at zero, keeps the tool straight, and records a whole-number measurement with its unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin at the ruler's edge instead of the zero mark or count tick marks rather than unit spaces. They may choose an impractical tool, mix scales, or omit the unit.
How to Assess It
- Give the student a crayon and a desk. Ask which tool to use for each, then measure and record both lengths to the nearest whole unit.
