What Students Need to Do
- Students measure lengths with rulers marked in whole inches, halves, and fourths. They display the measurements on a line plot whose scale uses the same appropriate units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student measures an object as 3 1/4 inches and plots one mark above 3 1/4. The student stacks marks for repeated values and labels quarter-inch intervals accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count tick marks instead of intervals or confuse halves with fourths. They may round to whole inches, use uneven plot spacing, or place repeated measurements side by side instead of stacking.
How to Assess It
- Give students four strips to measure to the nearest fourth inch. Ask them to create a correctly scaled line plot of the results.
