The Standard
Measure the length of an object using same-size "length units" placed end to end with no gaps or overlaps. Express the length of an object as a whole number of "length units."

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students measure an object's length by repeating one same-size unit from end to end. They count the units and report the length as a whole number of those units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student lines up eight cubes with no gaps or overlaps and says the pencil is eight cubes long. The student names the unit instead of giving only a number.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps, overlap units, or mix units of different sizes. They may count the boundary marks instead of the units covering the length.
How to Assess It
- Give the student equal-size paper clips and a marker. Ask the student to measure the marker and explain how the paper clips were placed.
