What Students Need to Do: Students measure two objects with the same standard unit and determine the difference between their lengths. They state how much longer one object is and include the unit.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student measures one ribbon as 28 centimeters and another as 19 centimeters. The student subtracts to find that the first ribbon is 9 centimeters longer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare measurements taken in different units or report the longer object's full length as the difference. They may subtract in the wrong order and lose the meaning of how much longer.
How to Assess It: Give students two strips to measure in centimeters. Ask which is longer, how much longer it is, and how the measurements support the answer.
