What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students measure a solid's volume by counting equal-sized unit cubes that fill it. They report the count with an appropriate cubic unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student counts cubes by layers without missing or double-counting any. The student labels the result in cubic centimeters, cubic inches, cubic feet, or the named improvised unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count only visible cubes or count square faces instead of cubes. They may report a volume with linear or square units.

How to Assess It

Give a drawing of a solid made from two complete layers of 12 cubes. Ask for its volume and the correct cubic unit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build solids from centimeter cubes and have students mark off each counted layer on a recording sheet.

  2. Ask students to compare two counting methods for the same cube solid and explain why the totals agree.

  3. Play a hidden-cube challenge using layered drawings, with points for correct counts and cubic-unit labels.

  4. Measure the volume of a small box by filling it with identical blocks and counting the blocks used.
