What Students Need to Do: Students estimate and measure the mass of objects in grams or kilograms and liquid volume in liters. They choose a sensible unit and compare the measurement with their estimate.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects grams for a small object, kilograms for a heavy object, and liters for liquid in a container. The student uses an appropriate measuring tool and records a reasonable result with its unit.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse grams with kilograms or use liters to describe an object's mass. They may choose a unit from size alone, overlook scale markings, or give a measurement without a unit.
How to Assess It: Give students a paper clip, a backpack, and water in a measuring jug. Ask them to estimate and then measure the two masses and the liquid volume, choosing grams, kilograms, or liters for each.
