What Students Need to Do: Students choose an operation to solve a one-step problem about mass or liquid volume when all measurements use the same unit. They represent the quantities with an equation or drawing and label the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student subtracts 7 liters used from 18 liters in a tank and finds 11 liters remaining. The student keeps the unit throughout the work and explains why subtraction fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may omit the unit or change it even though every measurement is given in the same unit. They may choose an operation from a keyword without identifying whether the situation joins, separates, groups, or shares quantities.
How to Assess It: Present a jug that held 15 liters before 6 liters were poured out. Ask how many liters remain and require a drawing or equation.
