What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to solve problems involving distance, time, liquid volume, mass, and money. They convert larger units to smaller units when needed and represent measurements with diagrams or number lines.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student converts 2 1/2 hours to 150 minutes before subtracting a 45-minute activity and finds 105 minutes. The student labels units and uses a diagram or equation to show the reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine measurements before expressing them in compatible units or choose an operation from a keyword. They may omit units, reverse a conversion, or misread a measurement scale.
How to Assess It
- A 4-liter jug fills six bottles with 1/2 liter each. Ask students how much remains and require an equation or labeled diagram.

Ways to Teach It
Model a measurement story with containers, rulers, or clocks, then record the quantities and operation in one labeled diagram.
Ask students which units must match before two measurements can be combined and why.
Play measurement-story sort by operation, unit type, and whether a conversion is needed.
Plan travel time, supply mass, drink volume, or spending for a class event using measured quantities.
