The Standard
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use two perpendicular axes to locate points in a coordinate plane. They read and write ordered pairs by moving along the first axis, then the second.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student labels the origin and both axes, then plots (3, 5) by moving 3 units horizontally and 5 units vertically. The student reads coordinates from a plotted point accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the two coordinates or begin counting from 1 instead of the origin. They may also switch axis labels midway through a graph.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank coordinate grid and ask them to label it, plot (2, 6), and write the coordinates of one provided point.
