What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent rational numbers as points on horizontal and vertical number lines. They identify opposites across zero and use coordinate signs to locate points and recognize reflections across one or both axes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student places -1.5 and 3/4 accurately and explains that opposites lie equally far from zero, including zero as its own opposite. The student plots (-2.5, 1), identifies its sign-change reflections, and explains each position relative to the axes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place negative numbers in reverse order or count tick marks instead of intervals. They may swap coordinates or ignore a negative sign when plotting a point.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to plot -3/2 and 3/4, identify each opposite and the opposite of each opposite, then plot (-2, 3/2) and its reflections across both axes.
