What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes |-4.5| = 4.5 and explains the distance on a number line. In context, the student distinguishes a signed quantity from its magnitude.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think absolute value always changes a sign without representing distance. They may say |-6| equals -6 because the original quantity is negative.
