The Standard
Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane. Recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use the signs of ordered-pair coordinates to locate points in the four quadrants. They recognize sign changes as reflections across one axis or both axes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student plots (3, -2), (-3, -2), and (-3, 2) in the correct quadrants. The student identifies the first sign change as a reflection across the vertical axis and the second across the horizontal axis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may swap x and y or use one sign to choose the entire quadrant. They may name the wrong reflection axis when one coordinate changes sign.
How to Assess It
- Plot (4, -3) and ask students for its reflections across the horizontal axis, vertical axis, and both axes, with coordinates.
