NY Next Generation Math NY-6.NS.8

Math6th GradeApply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

The Standard

Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points on a coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students graph rational-coordinate points to solve mathematical and real-world problems. They use absolute value to find horizontal or vertical distances between points sharing one coordinate.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student plots (-3, 2) and (4, 2) and finds their distance as |-3 - 4| = 7. The student identifies whether a segment is horizontal or vertical.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add signed coordinates without finding a positive distance. They may apply the method when both coordinates differ or reverse coordinate order while plotting.

How to Assess It

Ask students to plot (-2.5, 1) and (3.5, 1), then find and explain the distance between them.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Plot points with tape on a floor coordinate plane and measure horizontal or vertical distances.

  2. Ask students why coordinate distance must be nonnegative even when one point has a negative coordinate.

  3. Play Same Coordinate Match by pairing points and finding each horizontal or vertical distance.

  4. Map two landmarks on a coordinate grid that share a street or avenue and calculate their separation.
