The Standard

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices. Use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students draw polygons from vertex coordinates in the coordinate plane. They find horizontal or vertical side lengths from points sharing a first or second coordinate and solve contextual problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student plots (-2, 1), (-2, 6), and (4, 6) and connects the vertices correctly. The student finds the vertical side length as 5 units and the horizontal side length as 6 units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse x- and y-coordinates or connect vertices out of order. They may subtract coordinates from different positions or report a negative side length.

How to Assess It

Give four coordinates forming a rectangle with horizontal and vertical sides in the coordinate plane. Ask students to draw it, label every side length, and find its perimeter.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Plot coordinate cards on a large grid, connect vertices in order, and measure horizontal and vertical sides by coordinate differences.

  2. Ask students why points on a vertical side must share the same first coordinate.

  3. Play coordinate-polygon exchange by creating vertex lists for partners to graph and label.

  4. Map a rectangular garden or room on a coordinate grid and calculate required boundary lengths.
