What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students graph points in the first quadrant to represent a real or mathematical situation. They interpret each coordinate according to the quantities and units named on the axes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student plots (2, 6) on a graph where x is hours and y is miles traveled. The student explains that the point means 6 miles after 2 hours and relates other points to the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse coordinates, switch axis meanings, or count from 1 instead of the origin. They may plot accurately but describe a point without the context's quantities or units.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to graph (1, 3), (2, 6), and (3, 9) for hours and miles, then interpret (2, 6) in context.
