What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find a missing whole number in addition or subtraction equations. They solve equations with the unknown before, between, or after the operation and on either side of the equal sign.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student solves 8 + □ = 11, □ - 3 = 5, and 6 + 6 = □. The student checks each value by making both sides equal.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the unknown always appears after the equal sign. They may use the visible numbers in order without considering which quantity is missing.

How to Assess It

Ask students to solve □ + 4 = 9, 10 - □ = 6, and 3 = 8 - □. Require a quick check for each value.
