What Students Need to Do

Students find a missing whole number in a multiplication or division equation. They use the relationship between multiplication and division to determine the unknown.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student finds the unknown in 8 times n = 56 and 56 divided by n = 8. The student checks the answer with a related equation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the unknown symbol as an operation sign. They may use the two visible numbers in order without considering their relationship.

How to Assess It

Give n times 7 = 42 and 42 divided by n = 6. Ask students to solve both and write a related fact that checks each answer.
