What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find a missing whole number in a multiplication or division equation. They use the relationship between multiplication and division to determine the unknown.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student finds the unknown in 8 times n = 56 and 56 divided by n = 8. The student checks the answer with a related equation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the unknown symbol as an operation sign. They may use the two visible numbers in order without considering their relationship.
How to Assess It
- Give n times 7 = 42 and 42 divided by n = 6. Ask students to solve both and write a related fact that checks each answer.
