What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use multiplication or division to solve comparison problems about one quantity being a certain number of times another. They distinguish times as many from more than and represent the comparison with a drawing and equation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student interprets 30 as five times as many as 6 and writes 30 = 5 × 6. The student uses division to find the comparison factor when both quantities are known.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may interpret five times as many as five more or reverse the quantities being compared. They may use addition because two quantities appear without identifying the multiplicative relationship.
How to Assess It
- Present a comparison in which Lena has 6 markers and Omar has five times as many. Ask for Omar’s amount with a comparison drawing and equation.

Build two cube trains where one has a stated multiple of the other's cubes, then label the comparison.
Ask students to explain the difference between four times as many and four more.
