Use a combination of drawing, dictating, oral expression, and/or emergent writing to state an opinion about a familiar topic or personal experience and state a reason to support that topic.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share an opinion about a familiar topic or experience through drawing, dictating, speaking, emergent writing, or a combination of these forms. They give one reason for what they think.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student clearly communicates a choice or opinion in at least one form. The student adds a reason that matches the opinion, with adult transcription or drawing labels when helpful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw the topic without showing what they think about it. They may give a reason that names another choice, or state an opinion with no because behind it.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to show which classroom center they prefer by drawing, speaking, dictating, or writing. Have each student add one matching reason.

Ways to Teach It
Provide picture choices, crayons, and sentence strips so students can show an opinion and add one reason.
Ask, ‘Which story character would make a good friend, and why do you think so?’
Play Opinion Corners, then have students tell a partner one reason for standing in that corner.
Create a class snack survey where students record a choice and explain one reason to the group.
