What Students Need to Do: Students read emergent-reader texts accurately enough to understand them. They use developing phonics, sight words, picture support, and rereading appropriately.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student reads a suitable text with enough word accuracy to follow its meaning. The student can retell or answer a simple question afterward.
Common Misconceptions: Students may tell the story from pictures without attending to print. They may sound out every word but lose the sentence meaning.
How to Assess It: Have the student read a suitable emergent-reader page and answer one meaning question. Note print attention, accuracy, and rereading.

Lesson moves

Track print in an emergent text and pause after each page to state what happened.
Ask students whether the words and picture tell the same idea.
Play Read and Retell with brief patterned books.
Read a simple classroom instruction and carry it out.
