What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read beginning-reader texts suited to their ability accurately and fluently enough to understand. They monitor meaning, use context, self-correct, and reread.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student reads with growing smoothness and phrasing while retaining meaning. A mismatch prompts checking, correction, and rereading.

Common Misconceptions

Students may race, guess from pictures, or read word by word without meaning. They may continue after an error changes the sentence.

How to Assess It

Have students read a suitable beginning-reader passage twice and retell it. Note accuracy, phrasing, rate, self-correction, and comprehension.
