What Students Need to Do: Students name the author and illustrator and explain what each contributes to a book. They connect words with the author and pictures with the illustrator.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies both names on a book and states each role accurately. The student points to an example of words and an example of artwork.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the author reads the book aloud or the illustrator prints it. They may assume one person always performs both roles.
How to Assess It: Show a picture book cover and one page. Ask the student to name the author and illustrator and explain each person’s job.
