What Students Need to Do

Students provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what was experienced, observed, or resolved. The ending completes the narrative’s development.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student resolves or deliberately leaves open the central situation and reflects in a way earned by events. The ending fits viewpoint and tone.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize everything, add a moral unrelated to events, or stop immediately after climax. Reflection may state an insight the narrative never developed.

How to Assess It

Give a narrative ending at its turning point. Ask students to write a conclusion that follows from events and includes warranted reflection.
