What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what was experienced, observed, or resolved. The ending completes the narrative’s development.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student resolves or deliberately leaves open the central situation and reflects in a way earned by events. The ending fits viewpoint and tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize everything, add a moral unrelated to events, or stop immediately after climax. Reflection may state an insight the narrative never developed.
How to Assess It
- Give a narrative ending at its turning point. Ask students to write a conclusion that follows from events and includes warranted reflection.
