What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students conclude a narrative by following through on what was experienced, observed, or resolved. The ending reflects on events and clarifies their significance without overexplaining.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student connects resolution and reflection to carefully developed details from the narrative. The conclusion leaves readers with a credible understanding of change, consequence, or unresolved complexity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may impose a neat lesson on an ambiguous experience or repeat earlier statements as reflection. They may add information that the narrative never prepared readers to accept.
How to Assess It
- Give a narrative that ends after a difficult choice has consequences. Ask students to write a conclusion that follows from the outcome and reflects on its significance.
