What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students conclude a narrative in a way that follows from and reflects on what was experienced, observed, or resolved. The ending connects insight to the developed events.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student closes the central situation and offers reflection grounded in specific narrative details. The final insight fits what the narrator learned or noticed during the experience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may attach a broad moral unsupported by events or repeat the plot instead of reflecting. They may resolve the conflict through a sudden unexplained change.

How to Assess It

Give a narrative that stops after a character returns a lost wallet. Ask students to write a conclusion that resolves the event and reflects on one earlier detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Link reflection cards to event summaries and explain which conclusions the narrative has earned.

  2. Ask students how a final image can show reflection without stating a broad lesson.

  3. Play earned ending by revising morals, coincidences, and summaries into grounded conclusions.

  4. Conclude a personal account by reflecting on how a community or school experience changed one understanding.
