What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write informative or explanatory texts that introduce and organize complex ideas to reveal important connections and distinctions. They develop the topic with audience-appropriate evidence and useful formatting or media, use precise vocabulary and transitions, maintain an appropriate style, and conclude by explaining the information's significance.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student frames and organizes complex ideas, develops them with sufficient audience-appropriate evidence and useful formatting or media, and analyzes important relationships. Precise vocabulary and transitions create clarity and cohesion while style fits the task and audience. The conclusion follows from the explanation and states its significance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compile source facts or use complexity as an excuse for unclear prose. They may include information without explaining relevance or relationships.
How to Assess It
- Provide a multi-source topic and audience profile. Ask students to plan and write a concise explanation with organized evidence and analysis, precise vocabulary and transitions, useful formatting or media when appropriate, consistent style, and a significant conclusion.
