- Students write informative or explanatory texts that introduce a topic, organize related information in paragraphs and sections, and develop it with facts, definitions, details, and useful text features. They use precise content vocabulary and transitions and provide a related conclusion.

- A student establishes a focus, organizes related facts in paragraphs or sections, and develops ideas with accurate information and useful text features when appropriate. Precise vocabulary and transitions make relationships clear. The piece ends with a related conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without organization or analysis. They may mix opinion into explanation.
How to Assess It
- Give a topic and source notes. Ask students to write a short explanation with organized paragraphs or sections, developed facts, precise vocabulary and transitions, a useful text feature when appropriate, and a conclusion.
