What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write informative or explanatory texts that introduce a focused topic, organize information logically, and develop it with facts, definitions, details, quotations, and useful text features or media. They use precise vocabulary and transitions, establish a style suited to the task, and provide a related conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student establishes a focus, organizes information logically, and develops it with accurate, varied evidence and useful text features or media when appropriate. Precise vocabulary, transitions, and task-aligned style make the explanation clear. The piece ends with a related conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compile notes without explanation. They may drift into persuasion or organize by source instead of idea.
How to Assess It
- Provide a topic, source notes, and audience. Ask students to write a short explanation with logical organization, varied evidence, precise vocabulary and transitions, useful media when appropriate, consistent style, and a conclusion.
