What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write informative or explanatory texts that introduce and organize a topic, develop it with relevant evidence and useful formatting or media, and analyze relationships among ideas. They use precise content vocabulary and transitions, maintain an appropriate style, and conclude by explaining the information's significance.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student introduces and organizes the topic, develops it with relevant evidence and useful formatting or media, and explains relationships among ideas. Precise vocabulary and transitions create clarity and cohesion, while style fits the task. The conclusion follows from the explanation and states its significance.

Common Misconceptions

Students may report facts in source order. They may mix unsupported opinion into explanation or include details without analysis.

How to Assess It

Provide a short source set, topic, and audience. Ask students to plan and write a concise explanation with organized evidence and analysis, precise vocabulary and transitions, useful formatting or media when appropriate, consistent style, and a significant conclusion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort source notes into definition, classification, comparison, and cause groups before drafting.

  2. Ask students which details require explanation rather than quotation.

  3. Play Fact or Analysis with sample sentences.

  4. Write an explanation of a local process using researched content.
