What Students Need to Do

Students write real or imagined narratives using dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection; varied transitions; precise sensory details; and a fitting conclusion. They establish point of view, introduce a narrator or characters, show relationships among events, and conclude by reflecting on what was experienced, observed, or resolved.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student orients readers, develops events and characters purposefully, and controls sequence, pacing, and shifts. Precise details and a reflective or consequential ending create a coherent experience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list events without narrative development. They may add dialogue or sensory details decoratively, shift time without signals, or end abruptly.

How to Assess It

Give a narrative situation and turning point. Ask students to draft a scene with clear viewpoint, purposeful technique, coherent sequence, precise details, and a fitting ending.
