What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze why information is presented through visual, quantitative, oral, or other formats. They evaluate social, commercial, political, or other motives behind the presentation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies purpose and motive from specific design, language, selection, or delivery choices. The evaluation distinguishes evidence from speculation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every commercial source is false or every chart is neutral. They may name a motive without connecting it to presentation choices.
How to Assess It
- Provide a sponsored infographic and a short audio message on the same topic. Ask students to analyze each purpose, motive, and one supporting presentation choice.
