What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students analyze central ideas and supporting details presented through visual, quantitative, and oral formats. They explain how those ideas clarify or contribute to a topic, text, or issue.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student identifies a central idea and selects relevant details from each format. The analysis explains a contribution, clarification, or tension among the sources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize each source separately without integrating ideas. They may treat a striking visual or number as central without checking supporting context.

How to Assess It

Provide a graph and short audio report about the same topic. Ask students to identify the central idea, cite support from both, and explain one contribution.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Map central ideas and supporting details while viewing a graph and listening to an audio source.

  2. Ask students which format most clearly supports the central idea and how.

  3. Play Central Idea Integration with mixed-format evidence cards.

  4. Combine a public data chart and news audio to explain a community trend.
