What Students Need to Do: Students delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims. They distinguish claims supported by reasons and evidence from those that are unsupported.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student records the main claim, supporting reasons, and evidence accurately. The student identifies an unsupported claim and explains what support is missing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a topic with a claim or a reason with evidence. They may judge support from delivery confidence rather than what the speaker provides.
How to Assess It: Play a brief argument containing one supported and one unsupported claim. Ask students to map the claims, reasons, and evidence and explain the gap.
