What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and evaluate reasons and evidence a speaker provides for particular points. They judge whether the support is relevant and convincing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states the speaker’s point and matches reasons and evidence accurately. The student explains which support is strong, weak, or unrelated.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge the speaker’s confidence instead of support. They may confuse examples with reasons or accept any fact as evidence.
How to Assess It
- Play a short argument with two reasons and one unrelated detail. Ask students to identify the point and evaluate each support.
