What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a text’s point of view and explain how it develops meaning. They also examine how an author’s culture or geographic location may shape perspective.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student cites language, details, or omissions that develop viewpoint. The student makes an evidence-based connection between cultural or geographic context and perspective without stereotyping.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify pronouns but not the viewpoint conveyed. They may assume culture or location determines every belief instead of analyzing the text.
How to Assess It
- Give a short text with author context. Ask students to identify viewpoint, cite two developing choices, and explain one careful context-perspective connection.
