What Students Need to Do
- Students use context to confirm or correct word recognition and understanding. They reread when pronunciation or meaning does not fit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student detects a mismatch, checks context and word structure, repairs the word, and rereads the full sentence. The correction improves comprehension.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess solely from context without examining print. They may fix pronunciation but not reconsider the sentence’s meaning.
How to Assess It
- Provide a passage containing a word likely to be misread. Observe whether students use context and print, self-correct, reread, and explain the corrected meaning.
