What Students Need to Do: Students use surrounding meaning to confirm or correct word recognition and understanding. They reread when a word or sentence does not look right, sound right, or make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student pauses at a miscued word, checks context and letter patterns, and rereads the corrected sentence. The correction improves both accuracy and meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess solely from context without checking print. They may correct a word in isolation but not reread the full sentence.
How to Assess It: Provide a passage with a likely misread word. Listen for a context and print check, then ask the student to reread and explain the correction.
