What Students Need to Do
- Students use context to confirm or correct word recognition and understanding. They reread when pronunciation or meaning does not fit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student notices a mismatch, checks context and word structure, corrects the word, and rereads the sentence. Meaning becomes clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from context without checking print. They may correct pronunciation but not reconsider meaning or reread.
How to Assess It
- Provide a passage with a likely misread word. Observe whether students use context and print to repair it and explain the corrected meaning.
