What Students Need to Do: Students identify several text types and explain basic differences between stories and informational texts. They use features and purpose to support the identification.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies a story, poem, or informational book and names a relevant feature. The student explains that literary texts tell or create experiences while informational texts teach facts.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every book a story because it has pictures. They may use topic alone instead of considering features, structure, and purpose.
How to Assess It: Show one story and one informational page about the same animal. Ask students to identify each text type and give one reason.
