HS-PS4-1

ScienceGrades 9–12Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer

The standard

Use mathematical representations to support a claim regarding relationships among the frequency, wavelength, and speed of waves traveling in various media.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to use v = fλ to explain how wave speed, frequency, and wavelength are related. They should compare waves in different media, such as sound in air versus water or light in air versus glass, and use numbers, graphs, or tables to back up a claim.

Mastery looks like choosing the right values, rearranging the equation correctly, and explaining the pattern in words. Students often mix up frequency and wavelength, assume speed stays the same in every medium, or calculate correctly but give a weak claim without evidence.

Ways to teach it

  • Use a slinky and stopwatch to model slow and fast waves, then have students calculate speed from measured wavelength and frequency.
  • Ask students to write a claim explaining what happens to wavelength when light enters glass and slows down while frequency stays constant.
  • Give a three-row table with missing speed, frequency, or wavelength values, and have students fill in the blanks and justify one answer.
  • Have students compare ultrasound in tissue and sound in air, using provided speeds to explain why medical imaging needs medium-specific wave data.
