What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build or interpret a diagram, equation, or physical model of photosynthesis. They track matter entering and leaving while showing that light energy becomes chemical energy stored in sugar.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can create and explain a model with carbon dioxide, water, and light entering, and glucose and oxygen leaving. They clearly separate the movement of matter from the change and storage of energy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants get most of their mass from soil or treat light as matter. They may also say photosynthesis creates energy instead of changing light energy into chemical energy stored in sugar.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank plant cell diagram and the labels carbon dioxide, water, light, glucose, and oxygen. Ask them to add arrows and explain the energy change in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Use colored beads as atoms and a flashlight card as energy, then have groups rearrange reactants into glucose and oxygen models.
Ask students to write: Where does a tree's added mass come from, and where is the captured light energy stored?
Run a card sort where teams place matter and energy cards into input, output, or transformation columns, then defend one choice.
Compare plants grown under different light levels and have students predict differences in sugar production using an input-output model.
