3-LS3-2
The standard
Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to explain that living things have traits, and some traits can change based on conditions around them. They should use simple evidence, like observations, measurements, or pictures, to connect an environmental factor to a change in a plant or animal.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “The plant got less water, so it grew shorter,” and pointing to data that supports it. Students often mix up inherited traits with traits affected by care, food, water, sunlight, exercise, or space. They may also give opinions without evidence.
Ways to teach it
- Grow two bean plants with different water amounts, measure height twice a week, and record results in a class table.
- Ask students to write: How could the same kind of plant grow differently in two different places? Use evidence.
- Show two plant photos with different light or water conditions, then ask students to name the environmental factor and likely effect.
- Use a pet care chart to connect food, exercise, and weight changes in a dog or cat.
