What Students Need to Do

Students tell the difference between a flat map and a round globe. They explain that maps show specific places, while globes show the whole planet.

Given several examples, students correctly identify each map and globe. They can say what place each item represents and describe one difference in shape.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any round object a globe. They may think every map shows the whole world or that a globe only shows one country.

How to Assess It

Show a classroom map and a globe. Ask, “Which would help you find our reading table, and which shows our planet? Explain your choices.”

   Arrange classroom objects, then have students draw a simple overhead map showing where each object belongs.

   Display a neighborhood map and a globe, then ask, “What can we learn from each one?”

   Play Map or Globe by showing picture cards and having students move to the matching side of the room.
