What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze trial records, newspaper coverage, political actions, and the lynching. They explain how antisemitism, racist beliefs, sensational reporting, and mob power shaped public judgment. They connect renewed Klan activity to wider resistance to equal rights.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place the arrest, trial, sentence commutation, lynching, and Klan revival in order. They use source details to show antisemitism and white supremacy at work. They separate documented facts from disputed claims about guilt.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the conviction as proof of guilt, or the 1986 pardon as proof of innocence. They may miss racist stereotypes surrounding Jim Conley and the Klan's defense of white supremacy. Some assume newspaper reports were neutral.
How to Assess It
- Identify one example of antisemitism and one example of white supremacy connected to the case. For each, cite a source detail and explain its effect.

Give pairs source cards from newspapers, court testimony, Governor Slaton, and the lynching mob, then sort facts, claims, and prejudice.
