What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how tractors, mechanical cotton pickers, fertilizers, and other tools increased farm output while reducing the need for labor. They connect lost farm jobs to movement from rural counties into cities such as Atlanta.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from new farm technology to fewer agricultural jobs and urban growth. They can support the explanation with population, employment, or production data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think technology caused farming to disappear rather than making farms larger and more productive with fewer workers. They may also assume displaced workers left Georgia instead of moving to cities within the state.
How to Assess It
- Give students a graph showing declining farm employment and rising urban population. Ask them to explain the connection in three sentences using one specific technology.
