What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how rivers, the coast, and other water sources shaped settlement, transportation, farming, industry, and trade in Georgia. They support each connection with a clear cause and effect explanation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain how the Savannah River and coast supported trade and how Fall Line waterpower supported early mills. The student can also connect water to modern shipping, farming, electricity, jobs, and population growth.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name rivers and lakes without explaining their effects on settlement, transportation, or jobs. They may assume every river was fully navigable or mistake the Fall Line for a political boundary. Some focus only on drinking water and overlook ports, irrigation, mills, and hydropower.
How to Assess It
- Give students a Georgia waterways map. Ask them to choose one water feature and explain one historical effect and one current economic effect.

Ways to Teach It
On a Georgia map, students trace major rivers with blue yarn, then place cards for settlements, mills, farms, dams, and ports.
Ask students to write: How would Georgia's growth have changed if the Savannah River were not navigable?
Run a cause-and-effect card sort matching waterways and features to transportation, farming, power, trade, and settlement outcomes.
Give students current Port of Savannah cargo data and ask them to explain how water still supports jobs and trade.
